Description: Basil belongs to the Lamiaceae (Labiatae} family of plants. Although basil originally comes from Africa, the plant is relatively easy to grow, flourishing in the areas around the Mediterranean in particular. There are several different varieties of the plant however much of the basil that is grown for essential oil production comes from Egypt.
Color: Pale yellow to amber color liquid.
Consistency: Thin
Aromatic Scent: This variety has a sweet vaguely anise-like, minty, smoky odor.

Blends well with: Bergamot, Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Lime, Eucalyptus, Juniper, Lemon, Neroli, and Rosemary.

Common Uses: This variety of Basil contains a high linalool content which is considered to be more therapeutic, partly because of its ability to stimulate endocrine secretions. In aromatherapy Basil is used to soothe and uplift. It is popular with massage therapists for alleviating tension and stress in their patients, generally lifting the spirits and promoting a sense of well-being. Linalool helps to clear the sinuses, so is a favored ingredient by naturopaths when treating many respiratory ailments. When applied in dilution, Basil repels insects, while the linalool's mild analgesic properties help to relieve insect bites and stings.
History: There are many rituals and beliefs associated with basil. The ancient Egyptians believed that it would open the gates of heaven to a dying person. Western European lore sometimes claimed that it was a symbol of evil, while the Eastern Orthodox Church used it in the making of holy water.
Cautions: Basil oil can be a skin irritant. It should be used in dilution, and avoided during pregnancy.
